Questions to ask when Hiring a DJ

At DJ For Your Day we’ve heard all the wedding DJ stories. The one about how beautiful the bride was and that the ceremony was perfect, but then the DJ played the chicken dance 4 times and ruined everything. Or the one about how the DJ started drinking with the groomsmen and passed out in the middle of the reception. (see above photo) and yes that happened.

You have a LOT to accomplish before your wedding day. Invites, flowers, dresses, table arrangements, the list goes on and on. While music is the catalyst and backbone to a memorable wedding, the unfortunate reality is that the DJ is often an after thought for many couples. We’ve all experienced an underwhelming DJ performance at some point, don’t let that be the take away for your big day. Below are 5 questions to ask your potential Vermont wedding DJ and to ensure the success of a fun wedding for you and your guests.

1. Ask who specifically has been assigned to your wedding.
   If you are working with a professional DJ company, often times the contact person you first talk to is NOT your DJ. Entertainment companies will often sell you on their experience and track record of great customer reviews then farm out a DJ based on the availability of their staff. Be demanding that you get to meet your DJ in person (preferably) or via phone to ensure you are comfortable with their personality and individual abilities/track record.
2. “Can you tell us about your career as a DJ?”
   True DJ’s LOVE this question. Any DJ with experience will perk right up as they are passionate about their craft and find great joy talking about the skill they posses. This is a great opportunity for you to get an understanding of their level of expertise and their “style”
3. “What does a successful wedding look like to you?”
   If your potential DJ answers… “I get drunk for free and maybe hook up with a bridesmaid” CROSS THEM OFF IMMEDIATELY! You are looking for clear cut answers here that suggest the DJ knows the difference between a good and a bad wedding DJ experience for you and your guests.
4. “Do you blend music?”
   Blending is a term synonymous with “mixing.” You want to make sure your DJ understands the 101 principles of beat matching and mixing to ensure seamless transitions when the dance floor is packed.
5. “Will I have direct contact with you leading up to the event?”
   It’s absolutely imperative you have the contact information for your DJ. We can’t tell you how many times we get calls on the day of a wedding from the bride or the groom looking to make some last minute adjustments. Being flexible and experienced and able to think on the fly is the foundation to great customer service. Ensure your Wedding DJ is willing to provide you that service.
